Cesc Fàbregas has poured cold water on mounting speculation linking him with the vacant managerial positions at Chelsea and Arsenal, insisting that he remains fully focused on his project at Como.
Reports in recent weeks suggested that the former midfielder—who enjoyed distinguished spells at both Arsenal and CHELSEA during his playing career—had emerged as a surprise candidate for roles at either London club amid ongoing restructuring and poor domestic form. But speaking in Italy on Monday, Fàbregas dismissed the rumours as unfounded and reaffirmed his intention to continue developing the long-term project he began at Como.
‘I am very committed to this project. You never know, but right now I think it’s very unlikely I’ll leave Como,’ Fabregas explained after being handed the Enzo Bearzot award by the Italian Football Federation.
‘Last year, I wanted to see how other clubs operated. I mentioned it to the president, but I decided to stay. I’m very happy with what we’ve been able to achieve. This is an important project.
‘I need to feel good here. It’s important that my family is happy, and if they’re happy in Como, I’ll stay.’
On the prospect of managing the Italian national team in the future, Fabregas said: ‘Maybe someday.
‘Right now, I’m too much of a coach and I need to be on the pitch every day. Being the national team coach right now might be boring, too much free time.
‘In the future, when I’m older, you never know.

From a career-development perspective, remaining with Como for at least a few more seasons appears a prudent choice. At just 38, Fàbregas is still in the infancy of his managerial journey. By contrast, Como offers Fàbregas the space and stability to refine his identity as a manager. He is deeply integrated into the club’s sporting project, enjoys trust from ownership, and has the freedom to mould the squad without the immediate threat of top-flight scrutiny.
Furthermore, building a multi-year project at a developing club could set him apart from contemporaries, showing that he can nurture talent, implement a long-term football philosophy, and grow sustainably—qualities that elite clubs increasingly value.
While future returns to Arsenal or CHELSEA remain part of his potential pathway, Fàbregas’ commitment to Como suggests he is prioritising growth over glamour
