financial situation means Arsenal able to sign £84M star for summer bargain!

Benfica could be forced to lower their asking price for Arsenal linked Joao Neves this summer amid the club’s financial situation.

Joao Neves is a player that the likes of ARSENAL have been linked with in recent weeks – although his massive £84.5m million asking price may become an issue for some chasing clubs in the summer as many are not prepared to pay such a massive amount

But now Journalist Robin Bairner has told PSG Talk that the Portuguese club have been hoping for a fee of €100 million (£84.5m), but could now lower than in search of a sale.

“Benfica’s asking price they have set it over €100 million,” Bairner said. “His release fee is €120 million, which is clearly massive. I mean, he’s a player who’s exploded onto the scene, but has he done enough to justify that sort of fee? Probably not.

‘We’ve seen interest from England already [as] Manchester United and Arsenal have both been linked with a move for him. But these clubs are only willing to pay €50 million or €60 million, which is a huge shortfall in terms of what Benfica want…

“Benfica also need to make sales for financial reasons. They had hoped to sell António Silva, who’s a promising young centre back, but he’s not attracting the interest that he was in the first half of the season. So the whole situation with him is really complicated.

‘Benfica obviously don’t want to sell, but there are issues elsewhere that could force them at least to drop their asking price, which could spark a bidding war. It’ll be an interesting one to watch as the summer develops for sure.”

Benfica’s vice-president, Luis Mendes, recently dropped a hint that one of the clubs star players could be departing the club in the summer

“Any public limited sports company is obliged to sell players,” Mendes told O Jogo.

“If we look at it, 90% to 95% of European clubs sell players to balance their accounts. Even Real Madrid themselves had to do it last year. If we want to invest in training, in new players, we have to sell players.”

When asked specifically about Neves and Silva, Mendes said: “Benfica has to sell players. What you have to analyze at the right time is what the market offers players and then make a decision. That decision has not been made today.

‘But we are under pressure to sell because we have a capital situation that allows us to accumulate a loss, albeit a slight one.”
