Forget Enrique, Alonso: Chelsea told to hire Premier League boss!

Joe Cole has highlighted Oliver Glasner, the current manager of Crystal Palace, as a “good shout” to take over as the next head coach of Chelsea this summer, according to recent reports. Cole’s comments add further momentum to the wide-ranging speculation surrounding the Blues’ managerial search following the dismissal of Liam Rosenior.

Cole, well respected by Chelsea supporters for his contributions on and off the pitch, suggested that Glasner — who is reportedly leaving Crystal Palace at the end of the 2025-26 season when his contract expires — could jump at the chance to take the reins at Stamford Bridge.

His remarks come amid a crowded field of potential candidates and growing pressure on Chelsea’s ownership and sporting directors to land a leader capable of stabilising the club: ‘Glasner is a good shout because he’s not in that bracket where he’s top. He’d still look at the Chelsea job and go, “That’s a step up from Eintracht Frankfurt and Palace”,’ ex-CHELSEA winger Cole said on The Dressing Room Podcast.

‘But I think if you’re the Chelsea manager, unless they’re going to throw money at it, and I think the money has run out, whatever noises come out and whatever PR comes out, they’re isn’t going to be hundreds of millions spent this summer. It doesn’t make sense financially.

‘So they’ve got to find someone who can get a grip. Glasner is a good shout and he would want it.

‘Don’t even look at the top managers like Luis Enrique, if he’s leaving [Paris Saint-Germain]. I threw Xabi Alonso’s name in because of how well he’s done, but even him…’

Despite Cole’s public backing, it’s not clear how Chelsea’s decision-makers view Glasner’s fit with the club’s long-term project. Some insiders express concerns about whether Glasner’s tactical profile and communication style would align with the Blues’ evolving sporting structure, particularly given the intense scrutiny and expectations that accompany the Stamford Bridge post.

Should CHELSEA pursue Glasner, they would likely have to act swiftly: Crystal Palace are already preparing to replace him, with Coventry City’s Frank Lampard and Ipswich Town manager Kieran McKenna among those in the frame to succeed him in South London once he departs.

With the Premier League season entering its final weeks and Chelsea’s board under pressure to chart a clear path forward, the club’s managerial appointment is shaping up to be one of the defining storylines of the summer transfer and coaching window. How seriously Chelsea view Glasner — and whether he would accept the Stamford Bridge challenge if offered — remains a major talking point in English football
