Frank Lampard announces big Reece James deal ‘is great for the Chelsea’
Frank Lampard has admitted that Reece James signing a new contract with the club is great news.
After an impressive season with Wigan last year, the 19-year-old was brought back to the club to prove that he has the ability to play at a club like Chelsea, and he impressed once again against Crystal Palace on Saturday when he kept Wilfried Zaha quiet during Chelsea’s 2-0 win against the Eagles at Stamford Bridge.
The teenager was playing in his favoured right-back position but he faces competition from Cesar Azpilicueta for a starting berth and Lampard has already admitted that he wants to retain some experience in what is a young back five, meaning that James will need to fight for his position at Chelsea.
And after months and months of speculation about a possible deal for the young man, Chelsea and James have now come to an agreement over a new deal and he has agreed to sign a new contract for the next five-years, with reports claiming it will be close to the £80,000-a-week mark
Lampard told the Chelsea website: ‘I rate him very highly,’
‘I knew him as a youth player in the Academy here. I saw him on loan last year when he did fantastically well at Wigan. I tried to get him to Derby [on loan] but he could not come in the mid-season, but I admired him a lot. Then to work with him I feel the same and even more so.
‘He has got his foot into the first team here and I think there is a lot more to come from Reece James,’ added the head coach.
‘He is a really talented player and he wants to learn, he wants to improve, he wants to train and do the right things and he has that talent. So it is great for the club that he has signed for so long.’
James spoke of his joy at having signed a new Chelsea contract which will keep him at the club until 2025, he told the Chelsea website: “It has been my dream to be here at Chelsea and play week in week out and to have a contract for another five-and-a-half years is living the dream again.
“I have always wanted to be here and another five-and-a-half years means a lot to me and a lot to my family.”
Look we all know that James has immense talent and his ability is there for all to say, so the fact he is getting game time to show just how good he is but not playing every week means that he will have time to develop and not burn out in the coming seasons.
He will be the clubs long-term right back, but for now he just needs to enjoy what is happening at Chelsea.
So the news that he has signed a new contract will be a massive boost to the club.
