Boss announces delight after Chelsea confirms defender makes move!
Chris Wilder has admitted his delight after Sheffield United signed Alfie Gilchrist on loan from Chelsea for the season
Gilchrist joined the CHELSEA Academy as an Under-11 and moved through the age groups at Cobham with his impressive performances impressing a number of coaches at the club
The defender enjoyed a breakthrough season with his boyhood club, making 12 appearances for former boss Mauricio Pochettino’s side and he has recently been rewarded with a new contract at the club.
However – the decision was made to allow him to leave the club on loan for the season and Sheffield United were the club that made an offer and convinced Chelsea to allow Gilchrist to leave the club, a move that Wilder is delighted with.
Chris Wilder told the club website: “The loan market tends to be one which intensifies later in the window, so we accepted we would have to wait a little longer if we wanted our top targets. Alfie was always one of those players who featured high on our wanted list.
“Everyone in the game is aware of Alfie and his abilities, so our pitch to him, and Chelsea, had to be spot on. There’s been a lot of work behind the scenes to get this deal through, and we’re looking forward to working with a really talented player.
“Alfie’s had a taste of playing at the highest level, and having spoken to him, he’s keen to get more games under his belt. He’s ready to take the next opportunity in his career and we’re delighted to have added him to our squad.”

Gilchrist must have been excited when he signed that big deal at CHELSEA – but even he knows that he is not ready to be in that Blues side just yet and a loan move makes the perfect sense.
United is a very good move for the lad to make.
