Liverpool wants to sign £80M attacker to replace departing Dutch star

Liverpool are reportedly considering a summer move for Anthony Gordon as a potential replacement for Cody Gakpo, with fresh reports suggesting the Merseyside club could reshape their attacking options ahead of next season.

According to TEAMtalk, Liverpool are exploring Gordon as an “upgrade” on Gakpo, while also testing the market for the Dutch forward through intermediaries. Reports elsewhere indicate that Gakpo could attract interest from Premier League rivals such as Tottenham, potentially paving the way for a high-profile winger switch at Anfield.

Gordon, currently at Newcastle United, has long been admired by Liverpool’s recruitment team. The England international, who grew up in the city and was previously part of LIVERPOOL’s academy, is seen as a dynamic wide option capable of fitting into a high-intensity system.

However, any deal would be complicated. Newcastle are under little pressure to sell and have previously made clear their desire to retain Gordon, who is under a long-term contract without a release clause. Reports suggest the Magpies could demand a fee approaching £100 million if they were to consider a sale.

The wingerhas been one of Newcastle’s standout performers, contributing goals and assists consistently while also demonstrating versatility across the frontline. His performances in Europe, including standout displays in the Champions League, have further enhanced his reputation.

Meanwhile, Gakpo’s situation remains fluid. Despite contributing to Liverpool’s recent success—including their Premier League title win—he has often been deployed out of position, featuring centrally rather than on his preferred left flank. This tactical usage has led to questions about his long-term role under the current system.

Would Gordon be an upgrade?

On paper, Gordon offers qualities that could better suit LIVERPOOL’s current tactical identity. His explosive pace, direct running, and defensive work rate align closely with the traditional demands placed on Liverpool wingers. He thrives in transition-heavy systems and can stretch defences vertically—traits that have sometimes been less evident in Gakpo’s more measured style.

Gakpo, by contrast, is a more technical and versatile attacker, capable of drifting centrally and linking play. While this makes him valuable, it can also blur his role in a side that often relies on clearly defined wide forwards.

The key question is ceiling versus fit. Gakpo has proven output at the highest level and remains adaptable, but Gordon arguably offers a more natural fit for a high-pressing, wing-focused approach. His age profile and Premier League experience also reduce adaptation risk.
