Man United all set to announce £26M deal – Boss issues statement over potential deal

Marseille coach Roberto De Zerbi has vowed to publicly defend Mason Greenwood ahead of his move from Manchester United

Greenwood impressed during his loan spell in Spain, scoring ten times and providing six assists in for the Spanish side as he looked to reignite his career.

He has not played for Manchester United since his arrest in January 2022 for attempted rape, controlling behaviour and assault. All charges were dropped in February last year.

But now he is all set to depart the club on a permanent basis after the French giants Marseille have agreed to pay the Red Devils a total of €31.6 million (£27m/$34m) for the England international, The Athletic reports

And ahead of his move – Marseille boss Roberto De Zerbi is not concerned about the criticism his team face. Asked about the prospect of Greenwood joining the French side amid the response to the reports, the Italian told reporters: “The only thing I can say is that when a player signs for the club where I work, I consider him as my child.

‘I protect him through thick and thin, even if I can pull his ear in private, I will defend him publicly. My players are like my sons.”

Greenwood had a very impressive season last year at Getafe and many were certain that he would have stayed put for another season – but this is a good move for the player if he is able to handle all the negativity he will once again be getting.

He did have a few options to choose from – so it will be interesting to see how this all works out.
