10-goal star Giroud opens up and announced delight after officially signing big Chelsea deal

Olivier Giroud has admitted he is delighted to have signed a contract to stay at Chelsea this summer.

Giroud has scored 10 goals in this season’s Europa League to help Chelsea reach the final against his former team. He is the first Chelsea player ever to hit double figures for goals in a single season of European football.

However, there has been a lot of transfer talk in the media over the past few months which have suggested that Chelsea may look to offload the striker in order to make space in the squad for a number of possible signings.

But with Chelsea still facing a transfer ban this summer, subject to an appeal before the Court of Arbitration for Sport, the club were keen to retain Giroud in an area of the pitch where they remain short of depth.

On signing his contract extension, Giroud said on the Chelsea website: “I am very happy to sign a new contract. I really wanted to stay at least one more year – I have felt part of the team, the family, since the beginning and hopefully there will be more trophies to come.”

Chelsea will need to keep hold of a number of their top stars this summer if they are keen to get back into the top four next season, and with star man Eden Hazard leaving, Maurizio Sarri cannot afford to let an experienced star like Giroud leave the club.

Giroud has had a decent spell in the Premier League and is a solid back-up to Gonzalo Higuaín, so it is an easy decision for Chelsea to make sure that he stays for at least one more year, especially as they cant buy any adequate replacements.

However, as soon as they are able to start buying players once again, Chelsea should delve into their transfer kitty and land a more long-term solution, as the club will need to acquire the kind of striker that will bring 30-40 goals a season.

He is the short term answer to a long-term problem for the Blues
