Boss issues transfer statement as Arsenal linked star seems to say goodbye to fans!
Eddie Howe has played down suggestions Arsenal linked Bruno Guimaraes ‘waved goodbye’ to Newcastle United fans after their win over Brentford,
Guimaraes has established himself as one of Newcastle’s most important players and a Premier League star since his £40m move from Lyon in January 2022, and is a player that all the big clubs have been really admiring over the past few seasons.
Eddie Howe’s side have regressed this term – but Guimaraes is still a player that could command a fee close to £100 million at the end of the season, with the likes of Man City, ARSENAL and PSG just three clubs that are reportedly interested.
Arsenal have been made aware that there is a verbal agreement in place between Newcastle and the player to listen to offers worth at least £80m, however, with City also likely to be in the running, it will be a battle to get a deal done.
However – despite this rumours – the Sun have claimed that Arsenal have made contact with the Brazilians camp over a possible move to the Emirates – and will hope to get him for far less than that £80 million.
The Brazilian scored the fourth goal in the 4-2 win and celebrated passionately in front of the fan base. But at full-time there was a suggestion Guimaraes – who has been linked with a move away – could have been bidding those supporters farewell.
Howe, however, encouraged fans not to read too much into Guimaraes’ gesture at the end of the match and is hopeful he will still be a Newcastle player next season.
Asked about Guimaraes’ gesture, Howe replied: ‘I don’t think it’s a wave goodbye. Bruno probably does that many times but it can be interpreted in a way that people watching decide that’s the case.
‘Certainly from my side, I hope it’s not. He is integral to what we’re doing and is an inspirational player, we’re desperate to keep him.’
Guimaraes himself appeared to be looking ahead to next season when he wrote on his Instagram page: ‘Finished the season with a memorable match!
‘Three points, two assists and one goal. Thank you for the support today and we hope it’s enough for us to be in Europe next season! Howay the lads.’
