Chelsea close in on possible £72 million signing, Arteta makes big Arsenal decision, Liverpool ace more suited to Man United and Wilson makes barkley claim
Thiago more suited to Man United, Chelsea get Haaland boost, Arteta makes Arsenal decision and Wilson wanted Barkley at Newcastle in news of the day roundup…
Andy Cole has claimed that Manchester United don’t have the pulling power to sign Chelsea target Erling Haaland from Borussia Dortmund.
It is no secret that Haaland is one of the most deadly, sought after and impressive strikers in the game right now and is heavily tipped to pack his bags at the end of the season and leave Borussia Dortmund.
Both Chelsea and Manchester United have both been heavily linked with a move for the young man, who would cost around £72 million in the summer if they opted to buy him this transfer window, rather than in 12 months time.
WHAT HAS COLE SAID?
“To get these guys to come, Haaland for instance, you’ve got to entice them with something,” The former Red Devils striker told the Daily Mirror.
“You’ve got to entice them with the possibility of winning silverware or being a year away from it. These guys are going to have other options, possibly Manchester City, Liverpool, Chelsea, Real Madrid, maybe Barcelona.
“If you’re playing and have the option of all these clubs, where would United really figure at this moment in time? Even though I love United, I don’t think the club now can ride on its name alone, especially when you’re trying to bring these players in.
“It’s not like when I signed for United. We have to be brutally honest, back then everybody wanted to go there. We’re talking 2021 now. Does everyone want to go to United now?
“I’m not quite sure everyone wants to now.”
Can UNITED BEAT OFF THE LIKES OF CHELSEA FOR HAALAND?
Look, United are one of the greatest sides in world football and are still a very attractive side to join, but if Chelsea are serious about getting a deal done, they have the money to beat off the Red Devils.
It will be interesting to see where he ends up, but at the end of the day, United have to beat off alot of clubs to get a deal done.
Reports have claimed that Mikel Arteta will stay at Arsenal amid speculation from Barcelona.
Arteta has done a pretty decent job at the Emirates since he took over the club last season, and is not starting to get his side firing on all cylinders as they seek to get back into a top four spot and add some silverware to the cabinet.
It is no secret that he has had his tough times at the club, had some bad results, but he is one of the most highly-rated young managers in the game, and now he is on the radar of Joan Laporta
WHAT WAS SAID?
Laporta is one of the favourites to win the presidential race and hold a second spell in charge of the Catalan club, and reports on the METRO website have claimed that he is looking to replicate the previous successes by bringing Arteta to the Camp Nou.
It seems like Barca really want to bring back Pep Guardiola, but his extension at Manchester City killed any hope of that, while Club legend Xavi has also reportedly ruled himself out of a Camp Nou return, so Arteta is now being targeted as the man that will bring back success back to the club.
It is believed that Barca believe that Arteta will be a great coach one day.
WHAT IS THE LATEST?
Football.london claim Arteta would be open to being Barca manager ‘one day’ but wants to see through his job with Arsenal.
Arteta has a contract at Arsenal until the summer of 2023 and has the backing of the club’s board, despite a poor season on the pitch, and the Arsenal chiefs have backed Arteta to complete a ‘cultural overhaul’ of the club.
GREAT NEWS IF YOU ARE AN ARSENAL FAN RIGHT?
Liverpool star Thiago Alcantara is “more suited to Manchester United”, according to Paul Scholes
After deciding to leave Bayern Munich at the end of last season, Liverpool managed to beat off a number of clubs to secure a deal to bring the gifted Spaniard to the Premier League for a deal that cost the club just £23 million.
Much was expected of Thiago when he arrived at Anfield for £20 million ($28m) from Bayern Munich in the summer, but he has so far struggled to live up to expectations in the famous red shirt.
WHAT HAS SCHOLES SAID?
The United legend told Premier League Productions of Thiago’s best position: “The way Liverpool play with the three in midfield, I don’t think he has great legs about him, so that central role would suit him down to the ground.
“Once you are in a wider position in the three, it’s very difficult to get around the pitch because he’s not that type of player.
“He just needs to be sat in the middle. Controlling things, bringing players into play and that’s what he’s good at – I just wonder if this way of playing that Liverpool play is suited to his style of football.
“He doesn’t seem a Jurgen Klopp type player, does he? You think of the midfield players he has got and the forward players. Everything is 100 miles per hour.
“I thought he would have been more suited to a Manchester United team. In a two in midfield with a holding player, really good strong defensive player, where he can sit and control games.
“Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool, I don’t see them controlling games. I see them going for the throat in teams. He hasn’t got that energy to really overpower midfield players.”
Callum Wilson admits he would have told Steve Bruce to sign the ‘unbelievable’ on-loan Chelsea ace Ross Barkley if the Newcastle United striker.
Wilson was the big summer buy from the Toon over the summer transfer window, but despite a slow start to life at the club, he has really become a firm fans favourite with his performances and his goals.
No other player has been directly involved with more goals for Newcastle this season – Wilson has 10 goals and five assists to his name – and the Magpies have yet to win a league game without the injured striker in 2020-21.
Steve Bruce was actually believed to have been keen on bringing Barkley to St James’ Park but the attacking midfielder ultimately completed a season-long loan move to Aston Villa last September.
WHAT IS THE LATEST?
Wilson knows Barkley from their time together in the England set-up and the Newcastle frontman would have loved to have teamed up with the ‘unreal’ Liverpudlian.
“Playing with him and training and what not at international level, for me, as a striker, he would be a great person to play with at club level,” Wilson told the Super Six podcast.
“He’d help you score goals and things like that. I didn’t even realise he was going to go on loan from Chelsea or else I would have said to Bruce, I would have said to the manager, ‘You’ve got to bring him up here because he’s unbelievable’.
“For me, I’ve got other great players in Jonjo Shelvey and players like that who can play unbelievable balls, who are obviously also contributing as well to my season.”
Shame really, he could have been a great signing for the club
