Arsenal star Holding reveals message sent before Gunners boss Emery wrapped up stunning Luiz deal
Rob Holding has revealed the message that former Chelsea defender David Luiz sent him before the move to the Emirates.
Gunners boss Unai Emery was seeking a top-class defender all summer, as he looked to improve the defence, but he simply could not get the funds together to go out and land a big time defender that would come in and really solve the defensive issues at the club.
Emery then shocked everyone in the English game by getting Arsenal to wrap up a deal for Luiz, who has proven to be one of the most inconsistent players at the vey top of the game for a long-time now, and one player that will not improve the back-line issues on a weekly basis.
But Holding, who had been out for a long-time with a serious injury, has come out and revealed he was impressed with his teammate after he offered him encouragement while still playing for Chelsea.
‘David Luiz messaged me out of the blue and I was taken back by it,’ Holding told Arsenal’s website after the win over Standard Liege.
‘He just said that it happens and that I’ve got a great career ahead of me. He told me that I just need to focus and I’ll be all good, so I felt if he was doing that for me why I can’t I do that for someone else, because it may give them a little boost.
‘I never played in the England Under-21s with Lewis Cook, but because we had the same injury at the same time and we had surgery on the same day, we’ve sort of kept in touch with each other. I remember when Sol Bamba for Cardiff did his injury too, so I also sent him a message.
‘When you go through an injury like that and you’re out for nine or 10 months, football and rivalry is put aside and you’re just getting behind each other. But I’m ready whenever the boss needs me now, so we’ll see what happens.
‘I’m happy with how I’m playing at the moment and I feel comfortable.’
There has been many doubters claiming that Luiz was the wrong kind of signing for Arsenal to make as he will cost the club points, as proven at the start of the new season. But Holding has a bright future in the game and if he can learn to be technically brilliant like Luiz, it will be a massive boost for the Gunners defence.
