Its Happening: Chelsea in talks to wrap up record-breaking £120M deadline day deal!
Manchester City have reportedly tabled an official offer to Chelsea for midfielder Enzo Fernandez as the Premier League champions look to strengthen their squad before the summer transfer window closes.
City are understood to have formally approached Chelsea on Monday with a proposal for the Argentina international, opening the possibility of a major transfer between two Premier League heavyweights.
Fernandez has established himself as an important figure at Stamford Bridge since joining Chelsea from Benfica. The midfielder arrived in January 2023 in a deal that made him one of the most expensive players in British football, having just helped Argentina win the 2022 World Cup.
Since then, Fernandez has developed into a key component of Chelsea’s midfield. His passing range, work rate and ability to dictate play have made him an important part of the team’s plans, while his experience at international level has further enhanced his reputation.
Manchester City’s interest therefore represents a significant development.
Enzo Maresca is understood to be an admirer of Fernandez’s qualities, with City continuing to assess midfield options as they look to maintain their position among Europe’s elite.
The reported official offer will now place the decision firmly in Chelsea’s hands. The Blues have been reshaping their squad throughout the summer, but Fernandez remains a player with considerable importance to their plans.
CHELSEA‘s reported agreement with Monaco for Lamine Camara has added another layer to the situation. The arrival of another talented midfielder has inevitably led to speculation that the club could be preparing for Fernandez’s departure, although signing a younger player does not necessarily mean Chelsea are looking to sell one of their established stars.
Any potential deal would also have to satisfy Chelsea’s valuation of Fernandez, particularly given his age, contract situation and importance to the squad.
For City, making an official offer demonstrates that their interest may be more serious than simple exploratory enquiries. However, convincing Chelsea to sanction the sale of one of their leading players is likely to be a considerable challenge.
CHELSEA should be extremely reluctant to sell Fernandez, regardless of how attractive Manchester City’s offer may be.
The Argentine is still entering his prime years and has the technical quality to become one of the Premier League’s outstanding midfielders. Losing him would create another major hole for Xabi Alonso to address at a time when the club is trying to build greater consistency.
Camara’s potential arrival would provide useful midfield depth, but replacing Fernandez’s experience and influence would be a different challenge altogether
