Liverpool urged to wrap up deal for treble-winning midfielder this summer

David James believes there is “no reason” why Kalvin Phillips would not fit into Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool side.

At Leeds – Phillips established himself as one of the best holding midfielders in the Premier League – and that prompted Man City boss Pep Guardiola to take him to the Etihad.

However – the move has not quite worked out and he has struggled to make an impact -with a number of injuries keeping him on the sidelines more often that he would have hoped for.

That has led to stunning reports in the media that West Ham were eyeing up a stunning deal for the midfielder – especially as they were seeking a replacement for the much talked about Declan Rice.

However – it now seems that LIVERPOOL are very much interested in a move for the midfielder as they seek to add some more proven players to the squad over the next few weeks.

The Reds have recently been linked with a move for the Manchester City midfielder, who was limited to only a handful of first-team chances last season.

WHAT HAS BEEN SAID – 

Explaining why a deal for the former Leeds star would make sense, James told GGRecon: “I believe Kalvin Phillips is a terrific player. Initially, the idea of Declan Rice going to Manchester City made perfect sense when you consider how well he and Kalvin play together for England, but obviously that didn’t come to fruition.

‘There’s absolutely no reason why Kalvin Phillips wouldn’t fit into that Liverpool side,”

“I’m not greatly concerned by his injury record because I seemed to remember him being on the bench most of the time for Manchester City last season. There’s no reason to be worried by his lack of gametime either as that suggests that these players are doing nothing when they’re not playing.

‘I can assure you that all players are still as fit as needed and Manchester City have started off flying this season despite only having three pre-season games, so I don’t believe Kalvin will need a lot of time to adjust if he was to make the move to LIVERPOOL.”
