Barcelona president Joan Laporta OFFICIALLY opens door for Chelsea to sign £134 million rated superstar with big announcement
Barcelona president Joan Laporta admits “there’s a market” for Chelsea target Antoine Griezmann this summer
Griezmann joined Barca from Atletico Madrid in the summer of 2019, having established himself as one of the world’s best forwards while winning the World Cup with France.
After firing at least 20 goals in each of the last six seasons, Griezmann scored just 15 times in 48 games in his first season for Barca, a disappointing haul given the €120m (£107m/$134m) fee required to bring him to the club, and he has not faired any better this season.
He has largely been played out of position since joining Barca, and because of that fact, he has not looked like the player that dominated over at Madrid for so many years and became one of the very best players in world football
That has led to reports in the media over the past few days which have suggested that Chelsea are very interested in a transfer deal for Griezmann and are prepared to pay him big money to get a deal done.
Now, Laporta told reporters at the official unveiling of summer signing Memphis Depay: “Griezmann is a Barca player, he has a contract with the club until 2024 and, unless circumstances change, we are counting on him.
“There have been some movements on the market and we can’t deny that there’s been interest in him. That’s a sign of his quality.
“It’s a special market and you have to use your imagination, perhaps thinking in swap deals, but we value Antoine a lot. The club made a big investment in him and we are happy with him.
“It’s not easy for a club to come in with an offer for a player at his level. But the transfer window is just getting started and there’s a market for Griezmann.
“If things start moving, we’re open to all proposals because we’re in a delicate moment financially and we have to balance the books to comply with the league’s financial fair play rules.”
