Agent opens up and announces Liverpool talks to sign €60million defender Gbamin from Bundesliga this summer
Liverpool are interested in Mainz star Jean-Philippe Gbamin this transfer window, according to agent Bernard Collignon
Gbamin has made almost 100 appearances for the German side in three seasons, missing just three games as Mainz finished 12th last season.
His performances for the German side this season have caught the attentions of the Liverpool boss, as he seeks to find an adequate partner for Virgil Van Dijk, who has turned this Reds side into a force at the back.
Klopp has been eyeing up moves for the likes of Kalidou Koulibaly, Toby Alderweireld and even Matthijs De Ligt over the past few months, but the agent of Gbamin has now claimed that the Reds have been tracking the versatile 23-year-old for many months.
Agent Bernard Collignon told German website Fussball Transfers: “In January 2018 Klopp called Mainz and wanted to commit him as a centre-back, who also helps out in midfield.
“But Mainz did not want to let him go in the middle of the relegation battle and in the summer, Liverpool signed Fabinho.
“I had meetings with Liverpool, Tottenham, Arsenal, Everton and many other clubs.
“He is in the shortlist. However, not as a top candidate, because its exact position is unclear.
“In my opinion he is a player worth €60million. It’s time for him to play as a centre-back.
“There he would be a top player in all four major leagues and would make a great career.”
Klopp knows the type of players that he needs to come in and help get this Liverpool side the Premier League title and he must have seen something special in the talented Gbamin.
The young man may not be setting Europe alight with his performances, and may not be the world class player that Liverpool need, but he as time to develop, especially next to Van Dijk.
So it will be interesting to see where he ends up, as he looks destined for a big move.
