Liverpool legend opens up on possible Arsenal deal for departing star Moreno
Liverpool legend Steve Nicol has questioned why Arsenal would want to sign Alberto Moreno this summer.
The Spanish left-back will depart the Reds when his contract expires, and the Daily Mirror claim Unai Emery is keen on him.
Emery has previously worked with Moreno when the pair were together at Sevilla, and he may swoop for a new left-back with doubts over Nacho Monreal’s future in north London.
Moreno’s time as a Liverpool player will officially end on the final day of this month, and he is joined in departing Anfield on a free transfer by Daniel Sturridge.
Italian outlet LazioNews24 recently claimed Arsenal have begun tracking Moreno, who it was confirmed this week will leave Liverpool when his deal expires at the end of the month.
But Nicol won’t believe the rumours as Moreno ‘can’t defend’.
“As a Liverpool fan I hope [Moreno joins Arsenal],” Nicol told ESPN. “But quite honestly, no [it won’t happen]. Moreno can’t defend.
“The reason Liverpool brought in Robertson was because they needed somebody who could actually defend in the Premier League particularly.
“So why would Moreno go to Arsenal in the Premier League?”
Moreno has not have the best of times of it at Anfield and it is strange to see that he couldn’t adjust to the way of Klopp, which has worked for many players.
But with the Gunners lacking serious funds over the next few months to acquire players that will improve the squad, a move for Moreno could be a smart move.
He knows how Emery likes to play football and is still keen to prove himself in the Premier League, so it could be a good risk to take for Arsenal.
So if Emery is looking to sign a new left-back this summer, why not go for Moreno as he would not cost anything and would add some much needed strength to the side, even if he has not been that impressive at Liverpool.
Emery needs more players that he currently has, and there are a number of free agents on the market that could add something to the side.
