Merson stuns Gunners fans and claims Liverpool ‘will tear’ Arsenal to shreds
Gunners legend Paul Merson has claimed Liverpool will tear Arsenal to shreds when the two sides meet in this weekend’s big Premier League fixture.
After losing their opening two games of the season, Arsenal have gone on to win 11 of their last 12 games under new boss Unai Emery and many Gunners fans are now looking towards challenging for a Premier League title, and not just a top four spot and Champions League football.
But despite their impressive winning streak, and despite the fact they have been scoring goals for fun, many in the media have not been too impressed with the performances of the Gunners and have been heavily critical of their poor defensive back-line, which has gotten away with some big decisions over the weeks.
Liverpool, who are joint-top of the Premier League and one of the favourites for the Premier League title this season, are looking to expose that weakness and add to their points tally this season and let the impressive front three of Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane loose on the Gunners back-line.
And Merson has claimed that Jurgen Klopp’s men will tear the Gunners apart, stating: ‘I can’t see anything but a Liverpool win. I think this is the day Arsenal show some big cracks. I just think the defence is terrible, all over the place, and no different to what it was before.
‘If Hector Bellerin is injured, you’re talking about Granit Xhaka at left-back, a central midfield player, and Stephan Lichtsteiner at right-back, who has been a good player but is nearly 35 now.
‘How many 35-year-old’s are there in the Premier League? We saw Leicester rip Arsenal to shreds for 30 minutes; they scored, Harry Maguire missed a sitter, they had a stonewall penalty turned down.
‘Leicester’s front three aren’t even in the same class as Liverpool’s. I just cannot see how Arsenal will live with them.
‘People will say: ‘Oh Arsenal will score goals…’ but Liverpool’s defence has been superb ‘I watched Arsenal win 11 games on the trot, and they could have easily lost four of them, let alone drawn them.’
Emery has seen his Arsenal side win game after game, but this will be the biggest challenge of his Arsenal career so far as Liverpool signed the right players during the summer transfer window to improve the back-line, and also add to the attack.
They are looking formidable and right now there aren’t too many weaknesses in the Liverpool squad, the only saving grace Emery has is the fact that he also has a very productive and creative attack that will cause Liverpool issues, his side have been scoring goals for fun too this season.
Merson is giving Arsenal no chance of picking up even a draw against Liverpool, but people shouldn’t underestimate a side that won eleven games in a row.
