Liverpool told to sign Arsenal and Manchester United target De Ligt for £60 million this summer
Mario Melchiot believes Ajax star Matthijs de Ligt would be a perfect fit at Liverpool.
De Ligt is one of the most in-demand players in Europe ahead of the summer transfer window, having captained Ajax’s impressive young side to the Champions League semi-finals.
Many reports in the media have suggested that the likes of Chelsea, Manchester United, Arsenal and Barcelona are all keen on a transfer deal, with the latter reportedly leading the chase for a £60 million transfer deal.
But the Reds have been urged to break the bank for the 19-year-old this summer, as Jurgen Klopp needs a top-class defender to go alongside Virgil Van Dijk at the back.
And Melchiot has said he would be the perfect defensive partner for van Dijk at Anfield.
The former Chelsea and Netherlands star said: “My boys at Ajax are of course going to try and hold onto him for as long as they can, but they know they’re coming into a difficult situation with De Ligt.
“I like him as a player, he’s very smart.
“He went through a very difficult spell when he first broke through because he made a couple of mistakes for the national team so the country was jumping on his back.
“But I think that shifted his mindset and made him an even better player. Now, the way he’s playing right now, I think if Liverpool were smart they’ll go after him.
“De Ligt and Van Dijk, those two together would be a great partnership.”
Liverpool have become a very attractive side for many top players over the past few seasons as many would love to work under the guidance of Klopp at Anfield.
They will be playing Champions League football again next season, be challenging for all the major trophies and will have the financial power to beat off most of their rivals.
But Barcelona are a hard team to turn down so Liverpool would have to offer something special to land the Dutchman in the summer.
But if anybody in the Premier League could pull off this kind of deal right now, it would be Liverpool, especially as Van Dijk is a good friend of De Ligt.
