Maddison for £20 million? Liverpool told to complete summer transfer deal for impressive Premier League star
Liverpool must target Leicester midfielder James Maddison to add some creativity to their workhorse midfield, Steve Nicol has told Jurgen Klopp.
Liverpool boss Klopp has put together one of the best squads in football over the last few seasons with some smart transfer deals, and he looks set to improve the squad once again in the summer.
The German knows he needs to add a bit more depth to his midfield, especially with James Milner and Jordan Henderson getting on in years, and Klopp reportedly feels that an adequate alternative needs to be signed.
And that has led to speculation that Liverpool may look to rival Arsenal for the services of Maddison, who has become one of the most hard-working players in the Premier League this season.
Leicester have pretty much built a side around him and will not want to part ways in the summer window, but some reports have suggested that a fee of £20 million could tempt Leicester into seeling.
And Nicol has urged Klopp to splash the cash and try to sign Maddison, as the Liverpool side needs to be tweaked a little in the transfer window.
“Klopp’s recent three in the middle of the park for Liverpool, over the last couple of years particularly, has been about gaining possession back, about closing the opposition back, about working really hard and then getting the ball to the front three,” Nicol told ESPN.
“I would love to see a little change in that with somebody like Maddison, who no question has already shown in the Premier League, from the middle of the park, he can open defences up, he can create chances.”
Klopp Knows what kind of players he needs to come in and help Liverpool stay at the level they are at, and then move on, so he has already lined up possible signings.
But Maddison is showing great potential and under the guidance of the German he could develop into real class Premier League star and an ideal replacement for Milner or Henderson.
And £20 million is not a lot of money for the man, not in todays football.
