Cech vs Leno: Gunners boss Emery has message for £22 million Arsenal star

New Arsenal boss Unai Emery has warned Bernd Leno he must wait for his chance in the side after Petr Cech started against Manchester City at the weekend.

After arriving from Bayer Leverkusen early in the transfer window, Leno was expected to walk straight into the Gunners first team and replace the aging Cech, who didn’t look as solid last season.

Despite keeping his 200th clean sheet in the Premier League, Cech made a number of costly errors for the club last season that cost them valuable points and did not look like the world class star many had been accustomed to seeing.

But for Arsenal’s Premier League opener against City at the Emirates Stadium, Emery opted to start Cech ahead of the 26-year-old.

And now Emery has suggested that Cech will remain as his No.1 for the time being, as Leno is still getting used to life in England.

‘We want the competitiveness from the goalkeepers and also every player in the squad,’ said Emery on the Metro website.

‘The pre-season is the same opportunity, the same chances for the goalkeepers. ‘We spoke also Petr did a very good pre-season, also today I think he played good also.

“Also he has this experience to continue defending our goal.

‘Leno is starting with us, he’s working very well, he played well in pre-season.

‘But he can wait to arrive in this moment.’

It is a smart decision from Emery to stick with Cech for the first couple of weeks of the new season, as Cech will add Premier League experience to the new looks side.
