Arsenal star admits transfer talks with Chelsea boss Frank Lampard held
David Luiz has revealed he had held talks with Chelsea boss Frank Lampard before making that shock move to Arsenal on transfer deadline day.
Luiz spent the whole summer announcing that he wanted to stay at Stamford Bridge and play a big part in the new era under Lampard, with many offers for a move away being rejected by the Blues.
However, in a move that shocked the Premier League, Arsenal completed the signing of Luiz on a two-year deal for a fee of £8m after he indicated he wanted to leave the club.
Reports suggested that the Brazilian centre-back trained away from the rest of the squad on Wednesday after he had gone on strike in order to secure a transfer.
But opening up about the transfer deal, Lampard insisted that wasn’t the case.
“There certainly weren’t any strikes, so I’ll make that clear straight away,” the Chelsea boss said on the Sky Sports website.
“We had some conversations over the last week, honest conversations because I know David well and I think the conclusion of that was that he moved on.
“The day David didn’t train was a decision that I made because we were in the middle of this, we were talking and it was quite clear which way it was going, but that was not a decision as a punishment or because there was a strike, it was just what worked for that day.
“It’s an area of the pitch where I have competition, there’s going to be competition there throughout the year and people will need to make that shirt their own. I don’t have ones, twos and threes and that’s what everyone has to understand and that will be the same everywhere.”
And Luiz has now seemingly echoed his former bosses words and admitted that he did speak to the Blues boss about leaving to join Arsenal: ‘It was a great pleasure,’ Luiz told ESPN Brasil after making his debut for Arsenal against Burnley.
‘It is a new challenge in my career, where I took the decision to fight for new things and I enjoyed it in the best way possible.
‘In talks with Frank [Lampard], he had a different plan for the year. So we spoke in total honesty and he made it clear that he had different ideas from mine.’
The move for Luiz cam out the blue for many Arsenal fans who did not see it coming, especially since Luiz was so happy to stay put this coming season.
But now that the transfer deal is done, many wont care why the move happened, they will just be hoping that the Brazilian is more consistent than he was at Chelsea.
