Man United ready £100 million Varane offer as contact made with Real Madrid?
Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho has reportedly made contact with Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane ahead of the January transfer window.
Mourinho has endured a terrible start to the new Premier League season and one of the worst of his career after seeing his side pick up just one win from their opening three games.
And the back-line have taken the full brunt of the force by the media with the likes of Victor Lindelof, Chris Smalling and Phil Jones all looking like they simply cannot handle the pressure of being Mourinho’s top centre-halves.
That has led to renewed speculation that the special one will now look to solve his issues during the January transfer window and try to land long-term transfer target Varane, whom he paid £9 million for when he was boss of Madrid back in 2011.
And the TMW website has claimed the Special One is eager to move for Varane ‘as soon as the winter market opens’ and is ready to splash around £100 million to secure a deal for the Frenchman.
The 25-year-old’s current deal reportedly contains a huge £180m release clause so United have minimal chance of landing their target on the cheap.
Here is what we think.
Varane is one of the best defenders in Europe and it has been a massive surprise to see him dropped to the bench under Lopetegui, as his pace and ability on the ball is second to none at the Bernabeu.
However, Varane is still happy at Madrid and would only leave the Spanish capital if the offer from United was too good to turn down for Madrid, and the player.
So it would be much more likely to see Tottenham star Toby Alderwerield arrive in January, as he is seemingly surplus-to-requirements.
But if Mourinho gets the backing from the United board then this deal is a serious possibility.
