Manchester United told they ‘should have signed’ £67 million star De Ligt rather than close in on Maguire deal
Manchester United should have tried to beat Juventus to the signing of Ajax defender Matthijs de Ligt, rather than chase the £80million signature of Harry Maguire claims Alan Brazil.
Maguire has reportedly become the top transfer target for United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer this summer as he seeks to improve his back-line and get the club back inside the top four.
There have been many reports in the media which have claimed that the England International will cost the Red Devils a massive £80 million to sign this summer, which have left many in the media claiming that Maguire is worth nothing near that kind of money.
But United had the opportunity to sign De Ligt from Juventus in a deal that could have cost just £67 million, which has been seen as a real bargain by the Italian giants.
And speaking on TalkSport, former Man United striker Brazil said: “Manchester United, could they not have gone in there with £68m?
“This is nothing to do with Harry Maguire – I like him as a player – but they are talking about £80m for Harry who is 26 and De Ligt is 20 next month but he goes for just £67.5m…”
Yes Maguire has been decent for Leicester over the past 12 months and has put in some decent performances in the Premier League, but the man is not worth anywhere near the £80 million that Leicester want and United would be wasting too much of their transfer kitty on this man.
De Ligt was the signing that many wanted and considering he has already proven himself against the very best of strikers in the game, he would have been a better long-term investment for United to make for the £67 million.
Even going out and splashing £80 million on Kalidou Koulibaly would be a good move, there are better options out there for United to sign and making a move for Maguire could be a massive mistake for the Red Devils as he may not even improve the back-line this coming season.
If United want a bargain defender with real quality, then Tottenham ace Toby Alderweireld should have been signed.
