Manchester United legend Schmeichel gives his verdict on De Gea replacement at Old Trafford
Former Manchester United goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel has given his verdict on Dean Henderson.
Regarded as one of the finest stoppers in the game right now, there has been a lot of speculation in the media about the future of De Gea, as there have been some big clubs linked with a move for the Spaniard with reports United are keen to sell.
He is one of the biggest players that the club, but he has not been that impressive this season under the guidance of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, and reports in the media have suggested that the club will allow him to leave, as they already have a replacement in mind.
Henderson is regarded very highly at Old Trafford and many at the club feel that he is now ready to come in and make his claim to be the clubs long-term number one, meaning that De Gea would be sitting on the bench more often than he would like if he stayed at the club.
Now, Schmeichel, who is regarded as one of the best stoppers of all time, has come out and given his verdict on the talent, he said on the SUN: “Would anyone seriously consider not having David de Gea in goal and put Dean Henderson in now?
“There’s no doubt about Henderson’s potential, but he’s played one season at a club who has had an unbelievable run in the Premier League.
“But Henderson will need to show another season, like he’s just come through, and then another one, and another one, in order to convince everyone that he is the right guy.
“There’s a really big difference between being the No.1 at Bramall Lane and being the No.1 at Old Trafford, a really big difference. Even just being a player at those two clubs.”
