Man United fans told if Champions League boss is heading to Old Trafford
Former Manchester United midfielder Nicky Butt has addressed growing speculation over the club’s managerial direction, particularly links connecting Paris Saint-Germain boss Luis Enrique with a potential move to Old Trafford, while casting doubt on whether the Spaniard would realistically leave his current role in France.
Luis Enrique, who guided PSG to a Champions League title last season and has since maintained strong domestic and European form, has been repeatedly mentioned in media reports as a leading candidate for the Manchester United job amid ongoing uncertainty over the club’s long-term managerial structure.
However, Butt has questioned the likelihood of such a high-profile switch, pointing to the stability and success Enrique currently enjoys in Paris. The former United midfielder suggested that the appeal of a new challenge at Old Trafford may not be enough to persuade the 55-year-old to walk away from a well-established project.
Speaking on the situation, Butt indicated that managers operating at elite clubs with strong backing and continuity are often reluctant to take on rebuilds elsewhere, particularly at clubs undergoing structural transition.
“He’s got vast experience in Champions League level, which is where Man United want to be,” Butt said. “I don’t see him leaving PSG, I just don’t see it, and with all due respect to United, where they are at the minute, it’s a massive task for someone to go into that football club, put a project together and start rebuilding.”
“We’ve got a rebuilding process of two or three years. It got flagged up against Leeds that when we had one or two injuries and suspensions, straight away the squad’s not big enough. Unless [Enrique] really wants a new project, why do you leave Paris where you are very comfortable and it’s a great place to live with your family?”
Reports suggest PSG are keen to extend Enrique’s stay, with discussions already underway over an improved contract, reinforcing the sense that the French champions are determined to secure his long-term future. His tenure in Paris has been marked by consistent success, including multiple trophies and a high win rate, further strengthening his position within the club hierarchy.
Butt’s comments also reflect a broader debate around Manchester United’s managerial identity, with the club still evaluating its long-term direction following a series of changes in recent seasons. While elite names continue to be linked with the role, there is increasing recognition that attracting an established Champions League-winning coach may depend heavily on timing and project clarity
