Exciting £100m Benfica star opens up on possible exit and Manchester United move after price set
Benfica star Joao Felix has told the likes of Manchester United that he is happy at the Portuguese club.
The 19-year-old is considered one of the most exciting prospects in European football after bursting onto the scene this season, , scoring or assisting 31 goals in 43 appearances, and his performances have linked him with a mega money move to the Premier league.
United have sent scouts to watch the talented midfielder on a number of occasions this season, with speculation the Red Devils were ready to splash close to £60 million in the next window to be the club that secures his signature, as they look to add some fresh talent to the United squad.
Benfica executive manager Domingos Soares de Oliveira recently told TVI24 (via Record ) that any bid below the £100 million release clause will be rejected.
He said: “The goal is to keep the squad. If someone hits 100 million for Felix, the intention is not to sell.”
However, Felix has spoken out about his potential exit from Benfica amidst interest from United and Manchester City.
He told Benfica’s website: “I think that time will tell. I’m good here, I’m very happy, I love the club.
“I adore these fans who adore me. I want to enjoy the moment, play ball, have fun doing what I like, and then, over time, things happen naturally.
“I am very happy in Benfica.”
The lad may be showing the world just how talented he is and what he could produce at the highest level, but leaving for a big club so early in his career may not mean that he develops into the world class star that many expect.
A move to the Premier League is the logical step, both physically and financially, but he is getting the game time at Benfica that he needs to develop and staying put for a couple more seasons would do him the world of good.
United will have the money in a few more seasons to complete a deal, so they will keep a very close eye and then make the move, as right now he is not ready to justify the £100 million price tag that Benfica have placed on his head.
So United should focus on more established players in the transfer window, as only ready-made stars will get the club challenging for the Premier League and Champions League titles once again.
Felix is a decent young player but he is not ready to join a side like United.
