Man United close in on £45 million deal as Kovacic tells Real Madrid he wants to leave
Real Madrid midfielder and Manchester United target Mateo Kovacic has told Julen Lopetegui he wants to leave the club this summer, as he seeks more game time.
Speculation on his future has been in the headlines for the last few weeks, with the likes of Chelsea, Arsenal and United all eyeing up a possible £45 million deal after he announced he may quit the club.
United boss Jose Mourinho is still desperate to improve his midfield, and reportedly sees Kovacic as the idea man to come in and pull the strings, especially after Michael Carrick retired at the end of the season.
But now he has admitted that he is no longer happy with his situation at the Bernabeu and will be seeking a move away in the coming weeks after a clear-the-air meeting with his new boss.
‘The problem is that it’s difficult for a young player to have continuity and without that I will never be able to show my potential,’ Kovacic told Marca.
‘When I don’t play of course I’m not happy. I’ve enjoyed these three years in Madrid hugely, with incredible teammates, winning trophies.
‘But I haven’t been completely happy because my contribution to all of this has not been the biggest and it’s something I want to change.’
Kovacic played 36 times last season, and 39 the year before, but a lot of these appearances have been from the bench and he is unhappy at not getting the regular starts he feels can help his career.
