Man United news: Exciting striker OFFICIALLY completes late summer move
Manchester United striker Chido Obi has completed a season-long loan move to Willem II as the 18-year-old looks to take another important step in his development with regular senior football.
Obi has emerged as one of the most promising young forwards within United’s ranks and heads to the Netherlands after an impressive campaign at Under-21 level.
The striker scored 15 goals for United’s Under-21s last season, demonstrating his goalscoring ability and providing a clear indication of why he is regarded so highly at Old Trafford.
Obi has already gained experience of senior football with the first team. He made his Manchester United debut in February 2025 against Tottenham Hotspur, becoming one of the youngest players to represent the club at senior level.
Later that season, Obi made further history when he became Manchester United’s youngest-ever Premier League starter against Brentford.
The upcoming campaign at Willem II should provide Obi with the opportunity to build on those early experiences by playing consistently against senior opposition.
For an 18-year-old striker, regular first-team football is particularly important. Training alongside established professionals can only provide part of the development process, while competitive matches offer the opportunity to develop decision-making, physicality and composure in front of goal.
Willem II will hope Obi can bring the goalscoring instincts he demonstrated at Under-21 level to their senior side. For Manchester United, meanwhile, the priority will be seeing their young forward gain valuable experience before returning to Old Trafford.
Opinion: This is an important move for Obi
A season-long loan is arguably exactly what Obi needs at this stage of his career.
Scoring 15 goals for the Under-21s last season showed that he has already outgrown the level in terms of what he can learn from youth football. The next challenge is proving that he can reproduce those performances against experienced senior defenders.
His previous senior appearances demonstrated that United are willing to trust him, but occasional first-team opportunities are unlikely to provide the consistency required for his development.
Willem II should give Obi the chance to play regularly, experience the physical demands of senior football and learn how to deal with the pressures that come with leading the line.
There will inevitably be a period of adjustment, particularly as he adapts to a different league and style of football. However, that challenge could ultimately benefit him enormously.
Manchester United will be hoping that Obi returns next summer as a more polished striker, with a full season of senior football behind him and greater confidence in his ability.
