Inter Milan star Perisic officially confirms offer to sign for Manchester United
Inter Milan star Ivan Perisic has confirmed he was ‘really close’ to a transfer to Manchester United in the summer transfer window.
With Red Devils boss Jose Mourinho seeking to bolster his wide areas in the summer transfer window, the special one had hoped to convince Perisic to leave Italy and make the move to the Premier League after being impressed by the Croatians performances during the World Cup.
Mourinho made no secret of his admiration for the winger and the 29-year-old was planning on putting pen to paper when a £50million bid arrived from the Red Devils.
However, despite negotiations being at an advanced stage, his manager Luciano Spalletti convinced him to stay after signing for the Italian giants and in the end Mourinho missed out on another of his top transfer targets.
And Now Perisic has revealed just why he finally turned down the move to United, telling FourFourTwo: ‘It’s true that an offer from Manchester United was on the table – I was really close to leaving Inter.
‘When Luciano Spalletti arrived, he showed tremendous desire to keep me in the team and made it clear he didn’t want to lose me. That was very encouraging, and I haven’t regretted my decision to stay at Inter.
“In football, small details in these situations are key. Admiration from a coach like Mourinho is definitely something that flattered me. It’s confirmation of hard work and good performances.
‘When you’re praised by a guy like Mourinho – the manager of a huge club like Man United – it’s difficult not to think about such an offer.
“I’m glad he has a high opinion of me. These things motivate me to work and train hard, to achieve the best performances.’
Could Mourinho get his man in the coming transfer windows?
Perisic has been at the top of his game for the last few seasons and Mourinho has been a long-time admirer of the winger, but at the age of 29 there isn’t many more years at the very top of the game for the Croatian.
So if Mourinho is looking for a short-term fix rather than a long-term gain, then signing a player like Perisic would be a good move, as he would bring in instant quality and experience at playing at the very top of the game.
And he has admitted that it is his dream to play in the Premier League, so a deal is certainly on the cards.
