Man United star Valencia drops hint after Arsenal show interest in completing summer deal
Manchester United defender Antonio Valencia has hinted that he could be signing for Major League Soccer side DC United, ahead of a possible move to Arsenal.
The 33-year-old’s current contract expires at the end of the season and United have not taken their option for extending it for a further 12 months, which means that he is all set to pack his bags and walk away from the club after a decade of top-level service for the Red Devils.
And that led to shock speculation that Arsenal boss Unai Emery may be interested in taking him to the Emirates on a short-term deal, as the Spanish boss is keen to provide some much needed back-up to the injury prone Hector Bellerin, as Stephen Lichsteiner has not impressed like many had hoped.
However, Valancia has stoked the fire that he could be on his way to the MLS at the end of the season after the full-back retweeted and liked a fan hoping the news is true that he would be linking up with Rooney at DC United.
The tweet the fan quote tweeted from an Ecuadorian outlet says in Spanish: “Based on a special request from one of them, the Manchester United goalscoring duo will become a reality again in the capital of the United States. Two-year contract about to be finalized with D.C. United.”
A winger earlier in his United career, Valencia has spent more time at right back in recent seasons. Strong, quick and durable, he’s earned nearly 100 caps for his country, including several appearances at the 2006 and 2014 World Cups.
It is easy to see just why Emery was thinking about taking him to the Emirates, as he still has that top-level quality that many experienced players have towards the back-end of their top-level playing career.
But maybe it is the right move for the full-back to make that move to the MLS and link-up with Rooney, as he would not be a regular at the Emirates and in America he would be seen as one of its biggest stars.
Many United fans will thank Valencia for his services, many Arsenal fans will not want him signed at the end of the season, so the best option for him is to end his career in the same way that Rooney has been, with a nice big lucrative contract.
