Manchester United should have signed former Spurs star not Bassika, Solskjaer told
Manchester United should have signed Kieran Trippier instead of Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Steve Walsh claims.
Wan-Bassika had a breakthrough season at Crystal Palace last season and has fast become one of the brightest talents in the Premier League, especially as the likes of United, Tottenham and Liverpool were all reportedly vying for his services.
But with long-serving Antonio Valencia leaving the club at the end of last season, United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was desperate to add the young man to his squad during the summer window and got the United hierarchy to sanction a £55 million deal for the young Englishman.
And since his mega money move to Old Trafford, Wan-Bissaka has been an everpresent at right-back for the Red Devils so far this season and has impressed on numerous occasions, as he grows into a top-class right-back.
But Walsh has claimed that United should have made a summer move for Trippier, who shocked many when he managed to secure a transfer move to Athletic Madrid during the summer transfer window.
“United have made a lot of signings,” Walsh told The Athletic. “Look at £50 million for Aaron Wan-Bissaka.
“Now, perhaps it is too early and he will improve, but my eyes tell me when he gets the ball he is not the best.
“He is a good athlete and very quick, strong, and a good defender, but United don’t need a good defender, they need someone who can play, get on the ball.
“If I had been at United, I would have said, ‘Put your £50 million away, go and get Kieran Trippier for half that.
“He is an England international. He isn’t a great defender or a physical specimen, but he can play right-back and get the ball in early and you have strikers who can score goals.’ It is common sense.”
