Man United Wednesday! Martial contract, Ferdinand Scholes Neville messages and Ronaldo opens up
Here is a roundup of all todays Manchester United headlines.
Fresh reports have claimed Arsenal and Tottenham transfer target Anthony Martial now wants to sign a new contract with Manchester United.
Martial has been in the transfer headlines for the last few months with reports he was surplus-to-requirements at Old Trafford as boss Jose Mourinho is fed up of the inconsistent performances of the Frenchman, who can look like a deer lost in the headlights at times.
And that led to speculation that Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino was ready to make a £50 million swoop to try and tempt him into a move to White Hart Lane, but failed to convince United to let him leave for anything less that the £80 million Mourinho wanted.
Arsenal were also linked with a summer move as Unai Emery wanted that one big player that could add something different to his attack, as Danny Welbeck is prone to injuries and Alex Iwobi was very unproductive last season.
However, the Daily Express website has now claimed the relationship between Mourinho and Martial has improved in recent months and the Frenchman is willing to extend his stay at United, and is willing to sit back down with club officials to negotiate a new deal, which could see him earn as much as £175,000-a-week. Rio Ferdinand, Paul Scholes and Phil Neville were all critical of Manchester United seeing their former club lose to Juventus in the Champions League on Tuesday evening.
After almost pulling off a surprise victory over Chelsea at the Weekend, much was expected on Jose Mourinho’s side heading into the fixture with Juventus as the players would have been pumped from their performance against the Blues at Stamford Bridge.
But they looked awful and disinterested as Juventus dominated the game with over 70 per cent of possession and should have scored more than the Paolo Dybala goal in the first half which took all three points for the Italian giants.
And United legends Ferdinand, Scholes and Neville opened up on seeing United lose so convincingly with Ferdinand stating on the Metro: “If you were having to describe this game short and sharp it’s men against boys. There was a huge difference between the sides on quality on the ball they were bossed today. Juventus were far superior, in every department. They were well-deserved winners.
Scholes followed up: “They look like a side that’s been playing together for a while, they were a class above United. The sad thing is there looks to be an acceptance of these performances, not just from the fans but the players as well.
“Juventus look like a team who can go on and win the Champions League. There’s no improvement [from Utd] and we’re into Jose’s third year now. They need to improve massively to do anything in this tournament.
And Neville reacted: “Juventus were in control the whole game. Never at any moment did they lose their composure and class. United huffed and puffed and had half chances from Paul Pogba. There was a gulf in class and Juventus were the better side. Jose Mourinho is building his team.
“He wanted two centre-backs in the summer and one player he bought [Lindelof] was excellent tonight. But you need quality and magic in the final third. They didn’t get service into the box and when they did, they didn’t do anything with it.” (Click to read more)
Juventus star Cristiano Ronaldo has thanked Manchester United fans for their support on his return to Old Trafford during the Champions League fixture.
Ronaldo, who recently scored his 400th goal, is a real cult hero at Old Trafford and is still loved by the fans who understood why he had to leave the club and make the mega money move to Real Madrid in 2009.
Under sir Alex Ferguson the Portuguese winger developed from a lanky speedster into one of the best players on the planet, helping the Red Devils to three Premier League titles and one Champions League crown during his six years at the club.
But after helping his new side Juventus beat United 1-0 in the Champions league, Ronaldo sent a special message to his old club and thanked fans for they support they showed him during the midweek encounter, writing in Instagram: “An important victory in a very emotional match for me. It was great playing at Old Trafford again. Thanks to all the fans for the reception and support.” (Click to read more)
