Barcelona and Manchester United sent big transfer message by £60 million Chelsea star Willian
Manchester United and Barcelona target Willian has told Chelsea that he wants to stay at the club for ‘as long as possible’, aswell as claiming he never asked to leave the club in the summer.
The Brazilian midfielder was the subject of intense transfer speculation over the summer with rumours claiming that he no longer wanted to be a Chelsea player after falling down the pecking order under Italian boss Antonio Conte towards the back-end of last season.
Rumours even want as far to say that both United and Barcelona had made offers to Chelsea for the signature of Willian, with reports of bids of £60 million from the Red Devils and £70 million from the Spaniards left on the table.
But new boss Maurizio Sarri did not want to let Willian leave the club and sat the Brazilian, along with N’Golo Kante and Eden Hazard, down and convinced the midfielder that he would be a big part of the Chelsea starting squad this season, prompting the club to reject all transfer offers for Willian.
And now Willian has told the media that he now wants to stay with Chelsea ‘for as long as possible’.
He was quoted on the Daily Express: ‘A lot of people they say a lot of things in the press, but I never said that I want to leave Chelsea, never.
‘Always I say that I want to stay at Chelsea as long as possible, and I am happy to stay here.
‘When I arrive here my plan was to stay here as long as possible and now I am here five years I hope stay five more!
‘I know I have two years of contract left but I hope to stay more years in the Premier League.
‘I am very happy to be here five years. I have won titles and played a lot of games with a lot of happy moments, and a few sad moments as well but that is part of football.
‘But these five years have been very good for me and I am proud to be a Chelsea player.’
Here is what we think.
Willian is a class player and keeping hold of him during the summer was a great bit of business by Chelsea, especially since they could not convince a number of their transfer targets to make the big money move to Stamford Bridge.
So the news he never wanted to join United or Barcelona will come as some great news for fans, but the reality is that Willian is only saying these things because he is playing regular and is in a winning team.
There was a reason why both clubs made offers and the rumours were so strong, and that is because Willian seriously considered leaving Chelsea.
