Listen up Mikel: Gunners icon Merson hands Arsenal some much needed Aubameyang advice
Paul Merson believes Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang should revert to an out-and-out striker role, having only netted twice in the league this term.
There is no doubt that Aubameyang has been one of the best players in the Premier League over the past couple of seasons and won the Premier League Golden Boot in the 2018/19 season with 22 goals, and equalled that tally last term
However, since signing that massive contract in the summer, he has not looked like the same player and is well off his game, netting only two Premier League goals this season and looking like a man that is very low on confidence.
It has been blamed to the fact that he is not playing down the middle and is playing in a wide area, while Alexandre Lacazette has been leading the line for Mikel Arteta this season, but Merson has given the Spanish boss some advice
He told Sky Sports: “When Aubameyang is out on the wing, he can go 15 minutes without touching the ball.
‘You can’t have your star player going that long without touching the ball.
“How many goals would Jamie Vardy get for Leicester if you played him out on the left wing? Not as many as he gets now, that’s for sure.
“Defences are starting to work him out. They are starting to nullify the threat from him from out wide and making life hard for him.
“They are stopping the cut-inside and shot into the far corner.
“Something has got to change. At the moment, he’s not seeing enough of the ball where it matters.”
Lacazette is a very good striker, but even he is not scoring the goals that Arteta needs, so play Auba down the middle and let him score the type of goals that he has been over the past few seasons.
Arsenal need him, so play him in his best position
