Gunners hero opens up and leaves Arsenal fans smiling with big Luiz claim
Per Mertesacker has backed David Luiz to ‘learn from his mistakes’ after a mixed start to his Arsenal career.
Despite spending some serious money during the summer transfer window and improving the Gunners side enough to warrant a good chance of getting Champions League football next season, Unai Emery’s side are still lacking serious quality in key areas of the pitch.
The Gunners slipped to a 3-1 defeat at Anfield earlier in the season with Mohamed Salah producing a sparkling display for the hosts, and highlighting the problems that Emery has to deal with in the coming months, while also showing just how big the gap between the two clubs are.
And the performances of Luiz in the early weeks of the season have led to many believing that Luiz will not improve the progress of the club, and could be a major factor in their chances of getting the club back inside the top four.
But Mertesacker thinks that the Brazilian will prove to be a good addition to Arsenal’s backline given time, telling Sky SportsSky SportsSky Sports: ‘I think he (David Luiz) will learn from his mistakes on the pitch, but he is very comfortable being at Arsenal,’ he told Sky Sports.
‘That’s what I have been seeing. So we are happy to have him. ‘He brings something different to the table right now. So I think he is able to learn and excel his level of being an Arsenal player.’
There is no doubt that Arsenal do have quality in the side and that will pick them up a lot of points in the coming months, but Emery failed to improve the one area of the pitch which is the sides biggest concern and if they do not get back inside the top four this season, his naivety could cost him his job at the end of the season
And Luiz could be a big problem for the club in the coming months, especially as he has the ability to cost the club points at big times of the season.
