Mikel Arteta opens up and sends official message to Arsenal fans about possible £50 million Stones deal
Mikel Arteta has responded to reports suggesting that Arsenal are seeking a deal for Manchester City star John Stones.
Arteta is a boss that needs to spend some serious money over the next few weeks in order to improve a side that may in fact struggle to get a top six spot this season, nevermind a Champions League place for next season.
That has, of course, led to all sorts of speculation about whom could come into the club, who could leave the club, and what superstar signing that Arteta will seek to improve his very young side.
But now Stones has emerged as a shock transfer target for Arsenal , according to reports.
Arteta knows Stones well from their time together at Manchester City, but the Arsenal boss is not plotting a reunion despite being open to strengthening his back-line.
Asked for an update on any transfer business Arsenal are hoping to conduct this month, Arteta said on the Metro: ‘Bad news for you guys I have nothing to say yet.’
‘John is a player that I really like and I followed. We signed him when I was at Manchester City and I worked with him for many years and know him well.
‘When I look at centre-backs he has many attributes that I like from one, but we’re not interested.’
Amid all the speculation, Gunners legend Ray Parlour has recently welcomed the idea that Stones could be signed this transfer window: ‘I’d be very, very happy if they brought someone like John Stones to the club,’ the ex-Arsenal midfielder told talkSPORT.
‘He would definitely play. With Calum Chambers out and Rob Holding in the background, if one of Luiz or Sokratis get injured Arsenal haven’t got a lot of back-up at centre half.
‘Would Luiz and Stones work together? Well, they’ve got Sokratis. Stones could play alongside him. He’s the better defender.
‘Luiz has done alright in recent weeks. He’s done better. He does make a mistake, and we’ve see that this season, but I think he’s done well.
‘I think, if you’re really struggling in midfield, you could play Luiz as a holding midfielder.
‘He can play there because he’s got that range of passing and he’s very good on the ball, he is technically very good.
‘So they could play Stones and Sokratis at the back with Luiz in front of them, that could work.’
