Arsenal release statement as Gunners officially get late summer Monreal transfer deal all done and dusted
Arsenal have announced defender Nacho Monreal has left the club to sign Spanish side Real Socieded.
After splashing the cash during the summer window to acquire the services of David Luiz and Kieren Tierney, there was no need for Monreal to stay in the squad and there has been constant speculation that he could be heading back to La Liga before Sepetember 2nd.
But after a few days of talking, The Spaniard, whojoined the club from Malaga in 2013 and made 250 appearances for the Gunners in his six-and-a-half-years in north London, has now completed his move back home to play with Sociedad.
‘For six and a half years of service, for 250 appearances, for 10 goals, for 20 assists, for three FA Cups, for equalisers at Old Trafford and Wembley, for your unwavering consistency, and for being our very own #LeCabra, we just want to say….THANK YOU,’ a message read.
A statement on Arsenal’s website extended further thanks to the defender. ‘We would like to thank Nacho for his contribution to the club and everyone at Arsenal wishes him the best for his future.
‘The transfer is subject to the completion of regulatory processes.’
Monreal has been a very loyal servant for the Gunners over the past few seasons and it is very easy to see just why he is loved by many loyal fans, so many will be disappointed to hear that he is leaving in the coming days.
But it is a strange decision to make by the Gunners as it will leave the back-line a bit thin this coming season, especially with all the games that Arsenal intend to play over the next 12 months.
Arsenal should have kept hold of Monreal until at least the January window and if they can go out and bring in an adequate replacement, then they should offload, not during a period that they simply cannot buy players.
But many fans will still wish him the best of luck
