Late £100 million Varane move made as Mourinho reacts to Man United deadine day business

Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho was left frustrated by a lack of deadline-day activity after he missed out on signing a new defender.

The special one was hoping for one transfer before the window closed and had set his sights on trying to lure Tottenham star Toby Alderweireld and Real Madrid star Raphael Varane to Old Trafford.

But despite rumours he contacted Madrid about a possible £100 million deal for the Frenchman, and the constant speculation Alderweireld was desperate for a switch, the only signings United managed to acquire this summer were that of Fred, Diogo Dalot and Lee Grant.

And the special one is clearly not happy with the lack of transfer business, despite rumours they had close to £250 million to spend.

Asked if he had the tools to compete without new signings, Mourinho said on SSN website: “I have my players, I like my players, I like to work with my players.

“Let’s play football and by the end of November or December, you don’t need words. You will see which teams are candidates.”

With Manchester City improving their squad and Arsenal, Liverpool and Chelsea doing some great transfer business late on in the window, it could be a very hard season for the Red Devils as they needed more than a new centre-half to improve the side.

Despite being one of the biggest football clubs in world football, they are lacking superstar names and will many fringe players to step up for the upcoming season
