Red Devils legend tips trop-laden coach to make sensational Man United move –
Speculation over Manchester United’s managerial future has intensified after former midfielder Nicky Butt voiced support for a sensational return of José Mourinho, as pressure mounts on the club’s hierarchy to decide whether interim boss Michael Carrick should be handed the role permanently.
Butt, who previously worked alongside Mourinho during his time at Manchester United, suggested the Portuguese coach still has the authority and experience to manage the club at the highest level. Despite Mourinho’s turbulent departure in 2018, Butt believes the 61-year-old remains a “winner” capable of handling the demands of modern-day United and restoring immediate competitiveness.
However, Butt also acknowledged that internal decision-makers may favour continuity, with Carrick emerging as a strong candidate for the permanent position following an encouraging run of results since taking interim charge. Carrick’s steady approach and deep understanding of the club have reportedly impressed senior figures, while several players are understood to be supportive of his potential appointment
Speaking via Paddy Power, he said: “I would have him back. He’s a winner and can carry that football club, but the powers that be would never allow it, as they now prefer a manager who focuses solely on coaching rather than controlling recruitment.
“No established manager will want to come to Manchester United without guarantees on budget, time, and control. The structure right now makes it difficult, and they may prefer someone like Michael Carrick instead.”
Opinion: why a Mourinho return would be a mistake
While Mourinho’s pedigree is unquestionable, a second spell would likely represent a step backwards for United’s long-term project. His pragmatic, defensive style has historically delivered short-term trophies but often at the expense of attacking identity and squad cohesion.
His first tenure at Old Trafford also left lingering tensions within the dressing room and highlighted a recurring pattern of decline in his third seasons at clubs.
Manchester United’s current rebuild requires consistency, player development, and alignment between coaching and recruitment — areas where Mourinho’s track record has often been mixed. Reappointing him would risk repeating short-term fixes rather than addressing structural issues that have persisted since Ferguson’s departure.
In contrast, Carrick’s emergence offers continuity and a lower-friction environment, even if questions remain about his long-term ceiling. For a club attempting to modernise its footballing structure, the temptation of nostalgia in Mourinho may ultimately prove counterproductive.
For now, United’s hierarchy faces a defining choice: revisit a volatile but proven winner, or commit to a more progressive, if uncertain, internal solution
