Arsenal fans sent transfer message after duo signed up by Arteta

Charlie Nicolas has claimed that Mikel Arteta is paying the price for Arsenal’s poor spending in previous windows.

Arteta arrived at the club just a few weeks ago and has inherited a team that will struggle to get back inside the top four this season, but many fans wee hoping that a few new signings this month would happen to send a statement to the rest of the Premier League.

Arsenal were linked with the likes of John Stones, Thomas Lemar and James Maddison during the January transfer window, but they failed to complete any big-time deals and Arteta just about managed to secure deals for defenders Pablo Mari and Cedrik Soares.

Arteta was keen to add a few new defenders to the side during the January window, and despite admitting on numerous occasions that deals were being worked on, chose to not do anymore business after the duo arrived.

Now Nicholas says to only sign Mari and Cedric is a ‘reality check’ for his former club.

Asked to assess Arsenal’s transfer window, Nicholas told Sky Sports: ‘It’s not exactly Hollywood… but Arsenal spent the wrong way for the last two or three seasons.

‘Now we’re getting a punishment for it. ‘At least Arteta has identified that the big problem we’ve all known for three or four years is defenders.

‘It’s not a great window for Arsenal but it’s a reality check.’

Arteta knew what kind of job he would be taking at the Emirates when he said yes to the Arsenal job, so this was probably no surprise to hhim that he was not given more funds to spend in the transfer window.

Soares and Mari will certainly improve the side over the next few weeks, but only time will tell if the Gunners boss has done enough to boost the side enough to get back inside the top four spots by the end of the season.
