New Manchester United boss gets January transfer transfer message from board after £200m spree
New Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim has reportedly been told that he will not have much of a transfer kitty to play with once the January transfer window opens up in just a few months time.
The Old Trafford hierarchy unanimously decided to sack Erik ten Hag having decided enough was enough after Sunday’s late loss at West Ham continued their poor start to his third season in charge.
Manchester United, who sit 14th in the Premier League, have spent around £600m building a squad in the vision of Ten Hag since he was appointed in 2022 and were expected to be well up challenging for a Champions League place and maybe even for that Premier League title
What has happened?
Amorim is one of the most highly-rated bosses in the game and is keen to test himself in the Premier League, but it seems that he will not get much of a transfer kitty to play with.
Erik ten Hag, sacked last month, was handed £200m to spend in the summer – bringing in Joshua Zirkzee, Leny Yoro, Matthijs de Ligt, Noussair Mazraoui and Manuel Ugarte – and there is not much money left over.
Amorim will not have to buy to sell, the report adds, but is constrained by Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR).
What has the boss said.
Amorim was peppered with questions about his prospective switch to the Premier League and revealed why he made the move to United now: ‘For three days, I said I wanted to stay until the end of the season. But I was told it was not possible, I was told it was now or never, or Manchester United would go for another option.
“I had three days to make my decision. The change is radical in my life but I had three days to make this decision. That’s what I did. I have had other opportunities, the president and Viana can confirm this is not the first or the second time I was asked for by another team.
“I wanted that one in Manchester. I want that context. That context allows me to do things my way. It’s just like Sporting. There’s time when I have to take the step forward. It was harder for me than for any Sporting fan but I had to do this.”
Amorim added: “I will change my kids lives so there were a lot of things. I’m not just a coach, I’m a parent. It’s just something that was extremely challenging, just like I felt with Sporting. So I decided to go. And I don’t think I will be back to Portugal any time soon.”
United to sell in January window?
The fact there is a number of players at the club that do not suit the style of Amorim – Manchester United fans can expect a few stars to get sold in order to finance the players that the new boss would like.
Amorim needs to sign players that will make a difference, but he needs to make some funds available to do that.
