Carragher message, Scholes open up on Martial deal, Pochettino battle, Rabiot chase in Liverpool, Man United Sunday news and gossip
Here is the daily roundup of Liverpool and Manchester United news, gossip and transfer speculation.
Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has told Unai Emery he will need to invest heavily in the summer transfer window.
After months of speculation and weeks of rumours, Arsenal only managed to sign Denis Suarez from Barcelona during the winter window, with the 25-year old Spaniard joining the Gunners on-loan until the end of the season.
However, many fans are not happy with the transfer busness of the club as they wanted to see more investment in the back-line, as many of the players have simply not been good enough this season and have looked well off the pace.
And Emery, who wanted two signings this January, has been told by Carragher that he needs to invest during the summer window, especially as the back-line is not up to scratch.
He told Sky Sports: ‘It hasn’t been a great window for Arsenal but Emery was quite transparent when he said they could only get loans.
‘I think the summer is when they will have to really invest. It’s touch-and-go whether they make top four and that will have an impact on what happens in the summer. Arsenal need a big summer window.
‘If you are looking at the defence you have to go back 12 months when Arsene Wenger was still there and there was a lot of money spent.
‘They lost Alexis Sanchez and got Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Henrikh Mkhitaryan when they were crying out for a centre-back.
‘They did spend decent money on Shkodran Mustafi a couple of years ago but it hasn’t really worked out.
‘The defenders they signed in the summer are not good enough for Arsenal and that’s why they continue to have problems defensively and will do until that changes.
‘They have a fantastic strikeforce but in the summer they greatly need defensive reinforcements.’
Paul Scholes has admitted his delight at Anthony Martial’s new deal and has urged the Frenchman to develop at Old Trafford.
After months of speculation and weeks of talks, United finally convinced the Frenchman commit his long-term future to the club and end the speculation that he could leave for the like of Juventus, PSG, Arsenal or Liverpool.
His deal will now keep him at the club until 2024, and he has admitted he is now feeling the love which has so far eluded him at Old Trafford during his stint with the club.
And Scholes has now praised Martial for putting pen to paper on a new contract at Old Trafford. telling Sky Sports: ‘It’s brilliant, he was another player who struggled under previous manager.
‘We all knew his qualities, I remember talking to [Dimitar] Berbatov, who played at Monaco with him, and he was raving.
‘You need a run of games to express yourself and now he’s getting that, he can beat a man, score goals, bring excitement for the fans and that’s the most important thing. It’s a great signing.’
Fresh reports have claimed Arsenal are eyeing up bringing PSG midfielder star Adrien Rabiot to the Premier League at the end of the season.
Rabiot is one of the highly-rated midfielders in the french League and has a number of clubs, including Liverpool and Spurs, chasing him after learning that he is leaving the French giants after failing to agree a new contract wIth the club.
But now reports on the Sky Sports website have claimed Arsenal are looking at the possiblity of signing the Frenchman, especially as there are rumours circling in the media that the Gunners may decide to let Mesut Ozil leave the club.
Ozil, who is currently on a wage of around £300,000-a-week, has been frozen out of the team in recent games amid reports that Emery is unhappy with the midfielder’s work rate and attitude, and that has led to a lot of speculation that his future at the Emirates is over, with the likes of PSG, Juventus and Manchester United all long-term chasers of the German.
It is believed that Emery is a massive fan of Rabiot and would love to bring his former player to the squad in the summer, as he was unable to do much business during the January transfer window.
Former Gunners Perry Groves recently stated that Emery is fed up of Ozil and wil look to exchange him for the younger Rabiot.
“As a footballer I’m a big fan of Mesut Ozil’s, because sometimes when you watch him play for Arsenal – and it is sometimes – he does things that he makes look ridiculously easy,” he told talkSPORT host Jim White.
“But obviously Unai Emery now just doesn’t fancy him.
“He’s given Ozil so many chances – he made him one of his five captains, he’s played him in the ten role, he’s played him on the right of a three and behind the main striker.
“I think he’s just got fed up with him now.
“His work rate is questionable when Arsenal want to go and press, so he can’t do that, and against Chelsea he got the hook because he was ineffective.
“He had a niggling injury against Fulham, he had a virus, they had a reported bust up before the West Ham game where Emery was supposed to have told him in no uncertain terms that he is the manager and you’re going to play how I want you to play.
“Ozil is not being indulged anymore at Arsenal, because Arsene Wenger used to indulge him.”
Reports have claimed Chelsea are looking to beat off Manchester United for the signing of Tottenham boss Maricio Pochettino.
It is highly-regarded in that Uunited are looking to take Pochettino to Old Trafford in the summer, despite the fact Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has made a terrific start to life as boss at Old Trafford and brought the positive vibe back to the club.
Reports have claimed United are massive fans of Pochettino and see him as the future of the club, after the Argentine turned Spurs into one of the best sides in the Premier League, and all indications suggested they had no real contenders for Poch.
However, reports on the Sky Sports website has now claimed Chelsea are making a plan B in case Maurizio Sarri does not live upto expectations this season and have taken a keen interest in trying to prise Pochettino away from Spurs.
Sarri made an instant impact at Stamford Bridge but results and performances have dipped since he suffered the first defeat of his reign against Pochettino’s Spurs side back in November, and they believe they can prise Pochettino away from Spurs with a £50 million offer.
But the former Southampton manager’s preference remains United, should he opt to call time on his five-year tenure at Spurs.
