Record-breaking star leaves Chelsea fans fuming with statement after late move!
Enzo Fernandez has appeared to take a parting swipe at Chelsea after describing Manchester City as a club he had always dreamed of playing for following his British record-equalling £125million transfer.
The Argentina international completed his move to City late on Deadline Day, bringing an end to his spell at Stamford Bridge after two-and-a-half years in west London.
Fernandez joined Chelsea from Benfica in January 2023 for a then-British record fee and quickly established himself as a key figure in the Blues’ midfield. He went on to make more than 100 appearances for the club across all competitions and played an important role during his time in London.
However, despite winning the FIFA Club World Cup and UEFA Conference League with CHELSEA, Fernandez now believes his move to Manchester represents an opportunity to compete for even greater honours.
Speaking after completing the transfer, Fernandez expressed his excitement at joining City and claimed that playing for a club of their stature had always been one of his ambitions.
The 25-year-old told the club’s website: “I’m really happy to be here. I always dreamed of being at a club as big as City.
“I’m grateful for the opportunity. It’s a very emotional moment for me and my family, to take this step at 25 years old, in a football career that I always dreamed of.
“I’m so happy to be here, enjoying these first few hours I’ve had at the club. I can already see just how big it is and, we will enjoy ourselves and win lots of things together.”
The midfielder enjoyed some significant moments at Stamford Bridge, including helping the club win two trophies, but suggesting that he had always dreamed of playing for City can make his Chelsea spell appear less significant.
From CHELSEA‘s perspective, however, the £125million fee provides some consolation. Losing a key midfielder is undoubtedly a sporting blow, but receiving such a substantial sum gives the club considerable financial flexibility to rebuild.
Fernandez will now have to prove that his decision was the right one. Manchester City represents a huge opportunity, but expectations will be enormous.
