Red Devils fans told Manchester United ‘have done the best bit of transfer business’ of the summer

Paul Merson thinks Manchester United have done the best bit of business this summer by signing Raphael Varane from Real Madrid.

The France international is widely regarded as one of the finest centre-backs of his generation, having struck up a rock-solid partnership with Sergio Ramos at Madrid which provided the backbone for their recent success on domestic and European fronts.

He becomes United’s second big-money signing of the summer, with Jadon Sancho already completing a £73m ($101m) switch from Borussia Dortmund – and there may be more business to come before an August 31 deadline.

Varane will now be expected to develop a similar relationship with United captain Harry Maguire, with Swedish defender Victor Lindelof likely to drop to the bench to make room for the ex-Blancos star.

The Arsenal legend thinks it was a shrewd move by United to snap up the French defender, he told the sportreview. And the ex-Gunner reckons Varane could help the Red Devils mount an assault for the Premier League title.

The 53-year-old said: “Raphael Varane will turn Manchester United into title contenders – he’s the signing of the summer in the Premier League.

“With all the class and experience he brings with him from Real Madrid, I think he’s going to have a massive impact.”

When the news broke that Varane was going to be on the transfer market, no-one could have imagined that United would be the club that wrapped up a transfer deal for the player.

The money they spent is a real bargain and he will definitely make a big impact on the side, So we agree with Merson and believe that it is the best bit of business of the summer
