Redknapp opens up and announces he told Chelsea to sign £50 million rated defender from City
Harry Redknapp has claimed that he told Frank Lampard to sign John Stones in the summer transfer window.
Stones had fallen out of favour at Manchester City last season and was heavily linked with a move away from the club last summer, with a number of sides interested in a potential transfer deal.
But the 26-year-old has turned his stuttering career around and formed a formidable partnership with Ruben Dias this season, to help City lead the Premier League table and keep a staggering 20-clean sheets in all competitions this season.
Redknapp believes Stones’ quality was never in doubt and revealed on Sky Sports how he told Lampard to make a move for the centre-back before his nephew was sacked and replaced by Thomas Tuchel at Chelsea.
Discussing City’s imperious start to the campaign on Soccer Saturday, Redknapp said: ‘They’re fantastic aren’t they and John Stones… what a comeback. ‘I text Frank at the start of the year but they’d already made a signing at Chelsea. I said, “What about him, John Stones?”
‘I think he’s a real talent. Someone just had to get hold of him again and get him playing and believing in himself. ‘And he’s come back now and he looks the best centre-half around. He’s in fantastic form.’
Stones could have been signed for just £25 million in the summer, but he now worth double that amount of money, So Chelsea should have made their move while there was a chance, because it looks like he is about to sign a new contract and stay at the club.
And he fully deserves it, he has been brilliant at the back for the club and fully deserves all the credit and praise that he has been receiving.
