Red Devils board the manager Man Utd ‘100 per cent have to’ appoint

Manchester United icon Wayne Rooney has urged the club’s hierarchy to appoint interim boss Michael Carrick as the next permanent manager, saying the former midfielder has done enough to deserve the job beyond the current season.

Rooney, who remains one of Manchester United’s most celebrated figures and the club’s all‑time leading scorer, has publicly backed Carrick in recent days, insisting United don’t need to look elsewhere when choosing their long‑term leader.

Carrick, 44, took interim charge in January following the sacking of Ruben Amorim and has delivered a notable upturn in results. Under his stewardship, United have won seven of their first ten matches in charge, losing just once and propelling the side into the Premier League’s top four and into contention for Champions League qualification.

Rooney’s backing comes with a clear message to INEOS, United’s ownership group, as he believes Carrick’s calm leadership and deep understanding of the club culture make him the best choice to transition from interim to permanent boss, He said: ‘100% he should [get the job]. I have said this. I knew this was going to happen with Michael Carrick.

‘I know him very well. I know his character, his personality. It needed a calm head, but someone who knows the place and the players needed some love, and he has given them that.

‘We have seen the players play with more quality, more together as a team, and they look like a very strong team. For me, why would you change?

‘He has got the best winning percentage of any Manchester United manager after that many games. For me, he has to get the job.’

IS CARRICK THE RIGHT MAN FOR UNITED?

The argument in favour of Carrick is compelling. Manchester United have lacked stability for years, and Carrick’s intimate knowledge of the club and its culture — combined with his strong start — has immediately improved atmosphere and performance. His rapport with players has seemingly restored confidence and cohesion, qualities badly needed at Old Trafford.

However, questions remain about his long‑term suitability. Carrick has limited managerial experience compared to some of the seasoned candidates being linked to the job, and United’s ambitions demand a leader capable of managing both domestic and European expectations.

While current form under his leadership is promising, consistency across a full campaign — particularly in high‑pressure European competition — is a different test.
