Red Devils legend Paul Scholes is not a fan of Manchester United signing Matthijs de Ligt and labelled the former Bayern Munich star as a “second-rate defender” after failing to establish himself at the German giants.

The Netherlands international has signed a contract until June 2029, with the option to extend for a further year after it was decided Bayern Munich that he was no longer wanted at the club.

De Ligt has already won the league title in three countries with Ajax, Juventus and Bayern Munich, and the defender has been brought in to add some leadership and quality to a Manchester United back-line that has been leaking goals.

But Despite his accolades, Scholes remains unconvinced that De Ligt is the right fit for Manchester United –  he said on The Overlap Fan Debate, hosted by Sky Bet said: “With Man Utd, we’re talking about players who can’t get into their team. He’s [De Ligt] not playing for them [Bayern], that has to be a big concern, especially when Eric Dier is playing in front of him. That is a massive concern for me.

“You’re bringing in players for £40m, £50m just because he’s played for him [Ten Hag] two or three years ago,” Scholes remarked.

“Juventus got rid of him, he wasn’t good enough there and he obviously hasn’t been good enough at Bayern Munich. He’s coming to us almost like a second-rate defender.”

De Ligt has been very highly-rated for some time now and only time will tell if he becomes a great signing for Man United – but one thing is for sure – that defence needed sorting out and the Dutchman does have the quality to make an impact.

Manchester United have backed ten Hag this summer – it will be interesting to see how this all plays out and if the players he has signed make a difference.
