‘I want to earn my contract’ defiant Shaw sends message to Mourinho and Man United fans
Manchester United star Luke Shaw has opened up and confirmed that he wants to sign a new contract to stay at Old Trafford.
The England left-back, who joined United in the summer of 2014, is out of contract at the end of next season and can talk to possible suitors in the January transfer window about a free move at the end of the year.
But he has admitted that he wants to earn his contract at Old Trafford, as he feels the club believe in him.
“I want to earn a contract. I don’t want a contract because, in the next year I’m a free agent, so they might look to tie me down,” he said on the Sky Sports website.
“I know the club believe me. If they really wanted to, they could’ve cashed in. I’m going to fight for it this year and I want to be in that starting team.”
Once hailed as the next Ashley Cole, Shaw has endured a terrible time of it at Old Trafford and has struggled with injury and his fitness, with Jose Mourinho hitting out on a number of occasions that the left-back is not in the right shape.
But at the age of just 23, Shaw has plenty of time to prove many doubters wrong and show the club that he was worth the £30 million price tag.
However, with Mourinho in the market for a new left-back and Shaw linked with a summer move away, the former England International will have to work hard to get that new contract, as it seems the special one does not see him as part of his future plans.
So despite the fact he wants to stay and fight for his future,. which is admirable, his future at Old Trafford may already be decided.
