Brilliant Chelsea signing ‘the Premier League’s second-best’ fans have been told

Thiago Silva is the Premier League’s second-best centre-back after Virgil van Dijk, claims ex-Blues star Joe Cole.

Silva has been one of the very best defenders in the game for some time now, but no-one could imagine the kind of impact that he would have on this Chelsea side this season, especially as he is coming towards the end of his top-level playing days.

However, he has shone in this Chelsea defence and added that leadership to the side that has been lacking under the guidance of Frank Lampard, and now, Cole has come out and claimed that the Brazilian is the second best centre-back in the Premier League.

Van Dijk is the man that is ahead of him, having established himself as one of the very best in the world with Liverpool, helping them win the Champions League and Premier League title over the last few seasons.

Speaking about Silva on BT Sport, Cole said: “He needed time to get into it and now he looks like a Rolls Royce and one of the best centre-halves in the league.

“I do not think they make centre-halves like him anymore. Apart from Van Dijk, I would say he is the best in the League. He has brought so much quality, on the pitch and off the pitch.

“For [Antonio] Rudiger, [Kurt] Zouma and [Andreas] Christensen next to him, he is a standard bearer.

“That is the level you want to get at if you want to class yourself as a world-class centre-half.”

There is no doubt that Silva has been a massive success in the Premier League this season and there is not really any argument that he is not one of the best in the Premier League.

So based on his performances this season already, how could we not agree with Cole?
