‘Optimism’ Former Gunner Smith opens up on Arsenal summer transfer business

Former Arsenal star Alan Smith has given us his verdict on Arsenal’s summer window, and admitted ‘there is a lot of optimism’ ahead of the new season.

After Arsene Wenger departed at the end of last season, many believed new coach Unai Emery would not be given the transfer funds to land the ‘right kind of player’ this transfer window and improve on areas of the pitch which needed addressing.

However, the Spaniard did some great business over the last few weeks and acquired the services of Bernd Leno, Sokratis, Mateo Guendouzi, Stephen Lichsteiner and Lucas Torriera, all players that will improve the defensive aspect of the Gunners side.

And although fans wanted to see Barcelona star Ousmane Dembele arrive on transfer deadline day, Smith has admitted he is very happy with the transfer business his former club have managed.

“Most of the business was done early,” the former Arsenal striker told SSN.

“Unai Emery knew what he wanted. He’s addressed central positions – it’s going to be interesting to see his first-choice centre-back pairing.

“It’s going to be a different Arsenal and I think the fans will notice that in terms of organisation and shape. I think you’ll see a more aggressive approach in how they press the ball. There’s a lot of much-needed optimism.”

It is a new era at the Gunners and the fans can expect a few changes in the style of play, as Emery has a totally different approach to games than former coach Wenger.

But with the likes of Manchester United and Tottenham barely doing any business, the Gunners will have a great shot of getting back into the Champions League this coming season.
